Who is teacher leader? What are the qualities of teacher-leader? Should all teachers be leaders? These are the questions came to my mind at the beginning of this course. As a result, the lectures and discussions between my colleagues, we were looking for answers to these questions.
In fact, it is very easy to confuse both teacher-manager and teacher-leader. A teacher-teacher is a teacher who confines himself to the management of his class. While the teacher leader is active in school. One of my colleagues said that every teacher is already a leader. Because the students in class are already his or her followers. I disagree a little bit. Yes, having followers is one of the characteristics of a leader. I believe that being a teacher leader is being someone who thinks a lot more and goes beyond the class. First, teacher-leader is someone who loves his job very much. It is professional anxiety that can drive a teacher even out of school, making him a leader. On their own initiative or in formal situations, such people will show leadership.
Education is one of the most important areas in every country. Therefore, teachers-leaders are need in our society. Because a teacher-leader is someone who changes the system with his new ideas. Being a leader is about being responsible. Teacher’s main job is to teach. A teacher with 20 years of experience or a new teacher has the same obligation to teach. That is why teacher needs to become an administrator in order to expand his influence. A school administrator cannot be a specialist in everything. For example, a principal can teach biology, he is a professional in his field. But he doesn’t know anything about languages, and it’s not enough to solve all the problems of the school. So, what we need in schools is a group of leaders. Teacher-leaders can be formal leaders and informal leaders. Formal leadership teachers include department heads, senior professors. Such leadership teachers play an important role in schools. They run seminars and projects. If formal leaders chosen by selection process, informal leaders emerge spontaneously. They can take responsibility and initiate programs. They become leaders because of their experience and the respect of their colleagues. I think it doesn’t matter if it’s a formal teacher-leader or informal. The most important is that his goal is to make the organization work better. Thus it becomes clear that one of the main qualities of a teacher-leader is to collaborate. Teachers’ leaders should engage colleagues to support their vision, build consensus among different groups of teachers, and convince others of the importance of what they are proposing and of the possibilities for their overall improvement. They should be respected for their own pedagogical skills. They should also understand the evidence and information and the need to focus on those aspects of the school curriculum that will yield important learning outcomes. The presence of certain qualities makes teachers predisposed to leadership. Such teachers are usually open and respect the views of others. They are confident and determined, optimistic and enthusiastic. They are stubborn and not afraid of luck. They are flexible and always ready to try new methods. Many attributes of good leaders at the same time are attributes of good teachers. Good knowledge of your field, credibility, flexibility. However, unlike regular teachers, a teacher-leader needs to work well not only with students but also with colleagues. Therefore, an active hearing, organizational ability, quick decision-making skills are necessary for the teacher-leader.
Not every school welcomes teachers-leaders, especially informal teachers. The school administration plays a crucial role in creating an environment conducive to teacher leadership. Teachers need to be sure that administrators and other teachers will not criticize them for expressing ideas that may initially seem unusual. Some of the most effective approaches to solving difficult problems at school may be intuitive, but may require creative thinking from educators, which is only possible in a safe environment. School administrators must make it clear that teachers can safely express ideas and take professional risks. Now I’m practicing at school, and I’ve noticed that older teachers don’t like younger teachers. This is because school principals give preference to young teachers and support their ideas.
In conclusion, I would like to say that in-depth knowledge is an important component in every sphere. Especially in the teaching profession. Teaching is the only profession where you need to constantly study, update and replenish your knowledge every year. The world is changing with each passing day, so that your knowledge is relevant and needs to develop continuously. Personal qualities are very important for a teacher-leader, but motivation, love for his work, the ability to take responsibility are also essential. In general, teacher leaders are the future of schools and education.
